New Delhi, Oct 25 (NationPress) Congress MP Manickam Tagore vehemently criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday, claiming that the Special Intensive Review (SIR) initiative is being utilized as a “tool to oppress the vulnerable” and to manipulate voter lists under the influence of the BJP.
On October 23, the ECI revealed that it had conducted individual meetings with the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of various states and Union Territories heading into elections — including Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal — during a two-day conference at the India International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi.
In a strong response to this, Tagore stated, “SIR serves as a mechanism to intimidate the impoverished and disenfranchise the elderly. This operation is orchestrated under the directives of the BJP and Amit Shah. Their next target is Tamil Nadu. This initiative is not aimed at rectifying the voter list but rather at eliminating innocent voters and harassing the populace. The ECI is not committed to operating with integrity.”
Tagore also addressed remarks made by Union Minister for Food Processing Industries and LJP(RV) chief Chirag Paswan regarding the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
Paswan accused the RJD of exploiting the Muslim community for votes while failing to provide them with adequate political representation, urging the community to “liberate themselves from the shackles of a vote bank mentality.”
Questioning Paswan’s stance, Tagore remarked, “I am baffled as to why Chirag Paswan would voice such opinions while being allied with Amit Shah, who is known for his anti-Muslim sentiments. Being associated with such individuals while discussing Muslim voters is something he should reconsider. Now that he is a Union Minister, it’s evident how he has compromised his principles for that position.”
Tagore asserted confidence that the Mahagathbandhan will secure victory in the upcoming elections, stating, “Once the Mahagathbandhan prevails, we will unify all communities. There will be a Deputy Chief Minister from the Congress, and decisions will be made accordingly post-elections. Chirag Paswan should refrain from making such statements, and the minority community must recognize that he is making these comments while allied with anti-Muslim figures.”
