New Delhi, June 20 (NationPress) The Congress party has strongly criticized the BJP-JD(U) administration in Bihar, alleging widespread corruption, escalating crime rates, and a significant failure to address the pollution of the Ganga River despite substantial central government funding.
During a press briefing held here on Friday, Sasaram MP Manoj Kumar asserted, “As elections draw closer, the Prime Minister inundates Bihar with speeches filled with false promises. He showcases grand tours and makes numerous misleading announcements. Today, we are unveiling how those who pledged allegiance to the Constitution are committing blatantly unconstitutional acts.”
Kumar claimed that corruption under the BJP-JD(U) leadership has driven Bihar into severe poverty.
He referenced the caste-based Socio-Economic Survey made public by the Bihar government on November 7, 2023, stating that the figures reveal the state’s economic hardships.
“Out of 2.76 crore families in Bihar, over 94.42 lakh families -- approximately 34.13 percent -- live on an income of Rs 6,000 per month or less, translating to Rs 200 or under per day,” Kumar highlighted.
“Additionally, around 81.91 lakh families, or 29.61 percent, earn between Rs 6,000 and Rs 10,000 monthly. In total, nearly 9 crore individuals in Bihar are subsisting on Rs 40 to Rs 67 daily.”
The Congress MP further illustrated the dire situation regarding law and order in the state. “Bihar is drenched in blood,” he stated. “Daily, an average of 953 crimes are reported, including 8 murders, 33 kidnappings, and 136 serious offenses. The state has morphed into a center for gang violence.”
Moreover, he alleged that a series of recruitment and entrance exam frauds have dashed the aspirations of Bihar’s youth, compelling them to migrate in search of better opportunities.
Criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bihar, Kumar remarked, “He is here to provide excuses regarding the pollution of the sacred Ganga and inaugurate an illegal sewage treatment facility in Digha, Patna. But the people should be aware of what the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stated.”
Kumar referred to a recent NGT ruling that imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the Bihar government for its negligence in managing and reducing pollution in the Ganga. This order was issued following a petition by environmentalist M.C. Mehta.
He also condemned the state’s performance under the Namami Gange Mission. “From 2014 to 2024, Bihar was allocated Rs 3,914.53 crore under this initiative. Yet, more than half of the Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are non-operational, and those in operation fail to meet even the most basic quality standards,” he concluded.
