New Delhi, April 29 (NationPress) Congress leaders have intensified their call for a special session of Parliament, supporting the request made by the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and party president Mallikarjun Kharge, following the horrific terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The attack, executed by 'The Resistance Front', a faction linked to the banned terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, targeted a group of tourists in the scenic Baisaran Valley, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals and injuries to numerous others.
Rahul Gandhi and Kharge have reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to assemble a special session of both Houses of Parliament promptly to present a unified national front against terrorism.
Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit conveyed to IANS, "This is a positive move. We will have the opportunity to express our collective views. During such times, differences between the ruling party and the Opposition will vanish; unity will prevail on this matter. It will convey a strong message of solidarity to the international community."
"In the past, special sessions have been convened during crises. Hence, it is essential that this session occurs soon," Dikshit continued.
Another Congress leader, Pramod Tiwari, also shared his thoughts with IANS, stating, "Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge expressed in the all-party meeting that the Congress party stands with the government in India's battle against terrorism. We will support the government in all its initiatives. The Opposition will welcome the special session."
Congress leader Udit Raj stressed the urgency of the special session, highlighting that the government should have acted more quickly.
"The situation has become even more critical. If a terrorist has connections to the Pakistani Army, as their Defence Minister acknowledged, and given that 26 lives were lost in Pahalgam, immediate action is essential," he remarked to IANS.
"The government should initiate a Parliament session instead of waiting for the Opposition to demand it. It was Congress that called for the all-party meeting. It appears the government prefers to make accusations rather than take decisive action," Raj added.
In his letter dated April 28, Rahul Gandhi noted, "The terrorist incident in Pahalgam has enraged every Indian. At this vital moment, India must demonstrate our unwavering unity against terrorism. The Opposition believes that we should convene a special session of both Houses of Parliament, where the representatives of the people can showcase their solidarity and resolve."
Kharge, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, echoed Rahul Gandhi's sentiments, emphasizing, "In this critical phase, when unity and solidarity are paramount, the Opposition insists on the urgent need for a special session of both Houses of Parliament. This will serve as a powerful display of our collective determination to address the heinous terror attack in Pahalgam on innocent civilians on April 22. We sincerely hope that this session will be convened promptly," his letter stated.
Following the attack, the Central government convened an all-party meeting led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Rahul Gandhi participated in the meeting, offering his full support for the government's proposed measures.
The Congress party assured the government of its unwavering support to take necessary actions to respond to the tragic loss of innocent lives in the Pahalgam terror incident.
