Hyderabad, Feb 13 (NationPress) The ruling Congress party in Telangana has established an early advantage in the ongoing municipal elections as counting began on Friday.
The Congress has achieved a majority in six municipalities, whereas the main opposition, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), managed to secure one.
Voter participation was notable, with over 73 percent of the electorate casting their ballots across 116 municipalities and seven corporations on Wednesday. The counting process commenced at 8 a.m. on Friday, conducted under stringent security measures.
Results for 400 out of 2,582 municipal wards were announced by 10:30 a.m., with Congress taking 229 wards and BRS obtaining 123. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trailed significantly, securing only 36 seats.
The initial results favored BRS, which won 14 out of 18 wards in the Gaddapotaram municipality located in Sangareddy district, while Congress captured only three.
Congress secured majorities in municipalities such as Nandikonda and Halia in Nalgonda district, Ashwaraopet in Khammam district, Dornakal and Maripeda in Mahabubabad district, and Sultabanad in Peddapalli district.
A total of 52,17,413 voters were eligible to participate in the elections across 2,981 wards in 123 urban local bodies. According to the State Election Commission (SEC), 38,09,406 voters exercised their right to vote.
The turnout for municipalities was recorded at 75.88 percent, while municipal corporations saw a turnout of 66.05 percent.
The political futures of 12,944 candidates were sealed within the ballot boxes.
Polling took place for 2,569 wards across 116 municipalities, with twelve candidates in nine municipalities being elected unopposed.
In total, 10,719 candidates contested in these 116 municipalities, including 2,358 from the Congress, 2,478 from BRS, and 2,252 from BJP.
Polling was also conducted in 412 wards across seven municipal corporations, with candidates in two wards in Mahabubnagar and Ramagundam being elected unopposed.
2,225 candidates competed in these municipal corporations, comprising 410 from Congress, 401 from BRS, and 382 from BJP.
Notifications for the elections of municipal chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, and corporation mayors and deputy mayors will be released on Saturday.
The newly elected councillors and corporators are set to take their oaths on February 16 (Monday), coinciding with the election of municipal chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, and corporation mayors and deputy mayors.
