Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Feb 16 (NationPress) The Congress government in Telangana has successfully secured control in 84 out of 105 municipalities, along with six out of seven municipal corporations, where chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, mayors, and deputy mayors were elected on Monday.
Although elections were conducted for 116 municipalities on February 11 and results were announced on February 13, the election of chairpersons and vice-chairpersons could not be completed in 11 municipalities due to the newly-elected Councillors.
The principal opposition party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), managed to take control of 17 municipalities, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured one municipality.
Independent candidates also emerged victorious, being elected as chairpersons in three municipalities.
Despite Congress winning majorities in 66 municipalities, its Councillors were appointed as chairpersons and deputy chairpersons in an additional 18 municipalities with support from various parties and independents.
Interestingly, Congress gained power in two municipalities with the backing of the BJP in Telangana.
The BJP supported Congress for the chairperson's position in Narsapur municipality in Medak district, and in return, Congress helped elect a BJP Councillor as the vice-chairperson.
A similar coalition occurred in Aliyabad in the Medchal Malkajgiri district.
BRS gained the chairperson's position in Amangal municipality in Rangareddy district, backed by the BJP, while BRS supported BJP's candidate as vice-chairperson.
The elections resulted in 34 hung municipalities.
Among the seven municipal corporations where elections were held alongside 116 municipalities, Congress secured both mayor and deputy mayor positions in four municipal corporations: Mahabubnagar, Mancherial, Nalgonda, and Ramagundam.
Mood Ganesh from the Communist Party of India (CPI), an ally of Congress, was elected Mayor of Kothagudem Municipal Corporation, with S. Lalitha Kumar from Congress as Deputy Mayor.
Both parties won 22 seats each in the 60-member corporation.
In Nizamabad Municipal Corporation, Congress's K. Uma Rani was elected Mayor with the support of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), while Salma Tahseen of AIMIM became the Deputy Mayor.
Thus, the ruling Congress managed to prevent the BJP, which had emerged as the single largest party, from gaining further ground.
Nevertheless, Congress could not stop BJP from securing Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, where BJP won 30 divisions in a 66-member body, comfortably obtaining both Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions with support from some independents.
In Adilabad municipality, Independent Councillor Bandari Anusha was elected Chairperson, while Mohammad Rohith of AIMIM took the Vice-Chairperson position.
In this 49-member civic body, BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 21 seats, while Congress secured 11, and both BRS and AIMIM won six seats each, with five independents elected.
Congress, BRS, AIMIM, and four independents supported Bandari Anusha as Chairperson.
In Bhainsa municipality, independents were elected for both Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson roles.
The election of Chairpersons and Vice-Chairpersons for Yellandu, Sultanabad, Ibrahimpatnam, Kagaznagar, Ketanapally, Khanapur, Zaheerabad, Inderesham, Dornakal, Jjangaon, and Thorrur municipalities has been postponed by the election authorities.
The meetings of the urban bodies commenced on Monday, with newly-elected Councillors and Corporators taking their oaths, followed by the election of Mayors, Deputy Mayors, and chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of municipalities.
The elections, however, faced disruptions due to clashes between Congress and BRS supporters at several locations.
