Hyderabad, Feb 13 (NationPress) The ruling Congress party in Telangana has successfully claimed a total of 62 out of 116 municipalities and three out of seven corporations, as the vote counting unfolded on Friday.
The main opposition, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), managed to gain control of 12 municipalities, while the Forward Block secured one urban local body.
In 37 municipalities, there were no definitive winners, leading to intense maneuvering by both Congress and BRS to attract independent candidates and other parties to secure the chairperson and vice-chairperson posts.
Results from four municipalities remain pending.
Additionally, the Congress party achieved a majority in the Mancherial, Ramagundam, and Nalgonda corporations and is currently leading in Mahabubnagar.
In the Kothagudem corporation, both Congress and the Communist Party of India (CPI) won 22 seats each.
On the other hand, the BJP is leading in the Nizamabad and Karimnagar corporations, which are considered its strongholds. Notably, Nizamabad and Karimnagar are among the eight Lok Sabha seats held by BJP in Telangana.
Out of 2,582 wards in municipalities, results were announced for 2,543 seats by 4:30 p.m.
The Congress party secured 1,325 wards, while BRS obtained 707 wards. The BJP trailed with 260 seats, and other parties, including AIMIM and independents, won 251 seats.
From the total of 414 divisions across seven municipal corporations, results have been declared for 291 divisions. Congress won 154, BRS bagged 49 divisions, BJP got 34, and others secured 54 divisions.
More than 73% of voters participated in the municipal elections across 116 municipalities and seven corporations on Wednesday. The counting of votes commenced at 8 a.m. on Friday under strict security measures.
A total of 52,17,413 voters were registered to cast their votes across 2,981 wards in 123 urban local bodies. According to the State Election Commission (SEC), 38,09,406 voters participated in the elections.
The voter turnout in municipalities was 75.88%, while in municipal corporations, 66.05% of the electorate exercised their right to vote.
Notification for the elections of municipal chairpersons and vice-chairpersons, as well as corporation mayors and deputy mayors, is set to be issued on Saturday.
The newly-elected councillors and corporators will take their oaths on February 16 (Monday), on which day they will also elect municipal chairpersons and vice-chairpersons, along with corporation mayors and deputy mayors.
