Thrissur, Aug 8 (NationPress) The Congress party in Kerala is contemplating the initiation of legal action concerning the BJP's triumph in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency during the 2024 general elections. This follows serious claims made by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi about extensive electoral fraud.

The Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, V.D. Satheesan, informed the media on Friday that Gandhi has advocated for a comprehensive investigation into the alleged electoral misconduct.

“A multitude of complaints has surfaced in Thrissur about the Sangh Parivar engaging in illegal vote additions. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) will consider the feasibility of launching legal proceedings in this matter,” Satheesan stated.

In Thrissur, a seat previously held by Congress, BJP candidate and actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi achieved a remarkable victory with a margin of 74,686 votes.

Veteran Congress MP from Badagara, K. Muraleedharan, vied for the Thrissur seat but ended up in third place, while former State Minister and senior CPI leader V.S. Sunil Kumar secured the second position.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidate T.N. Prathapan clinched Thrissur by a margin of 93,633 votes, defeating CPI's Rajaji Mathew Thomas. At that time, Suresh Gopi was third with 2,93,822 votes.

Gandhi has also claimed that in the Mahadevapura Assembly seat under the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency, where the BJP won by 32,000 votes, over one lakh fraudulent entries were added to the voter rolls.

Reported irregularities include multiple voters registered under a single name, over 60 voters listed at the address of a single-room house, names replaced with English alphabets in place of the father's name, house numbers recorded as “0,” and voters aged 70 or 80 appearing in the first-time voter list.

Gandhi further asserted that such extensive manipulation was also evident during the recent Parliamentary elections and in state elections in Maharashtra and Haryana.

He emphasized that the BJP/NDA maintains power by undermining free and fair elections, thus lacking any legitimate claim to remain in office.

Point of View

The unfolding situation in Kerala reflects larger concerns about electoral integrity. The allegations made by Rahul Gandhi highlight the necessity for transparency and accountability in our democratic processes. As the Congress party seeks legal recourse, it’s crucial that all parties uphold the principles of free and fair elections, ensuring that every vote counts.
