Srinagar, Sep 6 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of J&K, Omar Abdullah, expressed his concerns on Saturday regarding the installation of a national emblem at the Hazratbal Shrine, stating that there was no necessity for it and that the mistake should have been acknowledged rather than defended.
Omar Abdullah questioned, “The primary concern is whether it was appropriate to install such a plaque in the first place. I have never observed this emblem being utilized in any religious setting before. So, what was the purpose of placing such a stone? If the work was commendable, people would have recognized it on their own.”
He further reflected on his grandfather, the late Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, who shaped the Hazratbal Shrine but never installed a plaque or emblem to acknowledge his contributions.
“To this day, people remember his achievements without any nameplate. This indicates that the stone was unnecessary,” the CM added.
In response to inquiries about the defacement of the national emblem by Waqf Board chairperson Darakhshan Andrabi, Omar stated that the public's sentiments were manipulated, and an apology should have been issued, but it was not.
“The emblem is designated solely for government offices and should not be displayed in any religious institution, whether a temple, mosque, or shrine,” he asserted.
The police have filed an FIR against individuals responsible for defacing the national emblem at the Hazratbal Shrine. However, the FIR does not specify any names as the identification of those involved is under investigation.
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and leader of the People’s Democratic Party, Mehbooba Mufti, has called for an FIR against the Waqf Board chairperson for the initial installation of the plaque at the shrine.
In a press conference, Mehbooba stated that the decision to install the emblem at Hazratbal had significantly hurt the religious sentiments of Muslims, and those responsible should face legal consequences.
“Instead of targeting those who defaced the emblem in response to their religious feelings, the government should file an FIR against the Waqf Board chairperson and members who permitted such an action. Hazratbal is a sacred site, not a stage for political symbolism,” she emphasized.
