Srinagar, April 2 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, has on Thursday urged for a thorough and transparent investigation into the recent encounter in the Ganderbal district, which reportedly resulted in the death of one terrorist.

During a statement made on X, Abdullah emphasized that the assertions made by the deceased's family should not be overlooked without a detailed investigation.

“The claims from the family cannot be dismissed outright. At the minimum, this encounter warrants a transparent and time-sensitive investigation with the findings made available to the public,” Abdullah stated.

He further remarked that any postponement or ambiguity in initiating an inquiry could undermine public trust.

“Delaying the announcement of a probe will only tarnish credibility, which serves no one's interests,” Abdullah asserted.

These comments arose following allegations from the family of the deceased, asserting that the individual killed was not a militant but a civilian, and they demanded an independent investigation into the matter.

The family is calling for a comprehensive inquiry to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death, insisting that the victim was indeed a civilian.

The Army's Chinar Corps, based in Srinagar, had posted on its official X account yesterday, stating, “Based on specific intelligence, a joint search operation was initiated by the #IndianArmy and @JmuKmrPolice in the general area of Arahama in Ganderbal.

“During the operation, alert troops noticed suspicious behavior. When challenged, the terrorists opened fire, prompting a retaliatory action from our troops. The operation is ongoing.”

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles were employed in the search for the terrorists, with additional forces deployed to prevent any surviving militants from escaping the cordoned area. Nearby villages such as Haripora, Bonzla, and Yarmuqam were included in the operation to tighten the cordon around Arahama village.

Historically, Ganderbal district in North Kashmir has been recognized as free from terrorist activities, making this encounter a significant concern for security forces.

The security personnel have been given strict orders to ensure that no civilian lives or properties are harmed during anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Any failure to adhere to these directives is treated very seriously by the Indian Army, J&K Police, and relevant security forces.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize the importance of transparency and accountability in security operations. The call for a thorough investigation into the Ganderbal encounter reflects a broader need for trust-building measures between the public and authorities in Jammu and Kashmir. The situation underscores the delicate balance between security and civilian safety.
