Key Takeaways
Srinagar, April 14 (NationPress) In response to the tragic death of an individual who reportedly leaped into a river while fleeing from cow vigilantes in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asserted on Tuesday that he will not permit a 'jungle raj' in the union territory.
Addressing the media in Bijbehara town of Anantnag district regarding the incident that took place on Sunday, CM Abdullah emphasized that he will not allow lawlessness and that maintaining peace is paramount.
The chief minister expressed a vision for a new chapter in Jammu and Kashmir, aiming to foster a peaceful and stable environment.
He remarked that certain individuals are intent on instigating a 'jungle raj' and disrupting the calm.
"Some individuals thrive on chaos and aim to incite communal tensions and conflicts, as evidenced by recent events. I want to assure everyone that as long as my government is in power, we will not allow such actions to take root in Jammu and Kashmir," he stated.
He called upon Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha to take decisive action against those implicated in the Ramban death case and those who attempted to disturb public order.
"This should serve as a clear warning that the current administration will not tolerate any form of disorder or lawlessness," he asserted.
In the meantime, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to investigate the disappearance of a man transporting cattle, who is believed to have fallen into a stream after allegedly being pursued and assaulted by four individuals in Ramban district.
The incident sparked significant public outrage, with the victim's family, identified as Tanveer Ahmad Chopan from Pogal, obstructing the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) at Makerkoot for over three hours on Monday.
While local residents accused cow vigilantes of chasing and attacking Chopan, police confirmed that an investigation is underway.
In a desperate attempt to escape his attackers, Chopan reportedly jumped into Bisleri Nullah near Makerkoot tunnel number 5 around 1:30 PM on Sunday and was swept away, according to police.
An FIR has been lodged at the Ramsoo police station, and the four suspects have been apprehended.
Ramban District Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Ilyas Khan stated, “An SIT has been formed under the supervision of the sub-divisional police officer, Banihal, Surinder Singh Biloria.”
The youth transporting the cattle had the required permissions for doing so, the official noted.
Although the victim's chances of survival appear grim, search teams from NDRF, SDRF, police, and local volunteers have been mobilized to locate him, according to officials.
