Jammu, April 4 (NationPress) On Saturday, MLAs from the ruling National Conference (NC) and Congress raised significant concerns regarding the Ganderbal ‘encounter,’ which resulted in the death of an individual, purportedly a civilian. They demanded a thorough judicial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

During the Question Hour, NC representatives asserted that an innocent life had been lost in what they termed a fabricated gunfight in Ganderbal.

"This cannot be tolerated. While we acknowledge that the Lieutenant Governor has initiated an inquiry, it is imperative for the Home Department to convey a strong message that no innocent person should lose their life in this sensitive region. A clear distinction must be made between militants and civilians," stated NC MLA Mubarak Gul.

Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather acknowledged that an inquiry is already underway.

Congress MLA Irfan Hafiz Lone displayed a placard demanding justice for the victim's family, while NC MLA Justice Hasnain Masoodi (retd) emphasized that the deceased's body had yet to be returned to the family for burial, noting that the right to a respectful burial is constitutionally guaranteed.

Congress MLA Nizamuddin Bhat contended that a magisterial inquiry falls short and insisted on the need for a judicial probe. "Justice requires prompt action and resolution of this matter," he asserted.

NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq remarked: "Following the incident, the Chief Minister mentioned the importance of hearing the family's perspective. The family's claims warrant investigation. It is positive that the LG has ordered a probe, and the investigation should delve deep into the events, clarifying what transpired, where, and how it unfolded."

NC MLA Mir Saifullah urged that security forces should be held accountable to prevent future occurrences of such incidents.

PDP MLA Aga Syed Muntazir noted: "The issues surrounding the Budgam encounter are being addressed through a commendable initiative. As the head of the Unified Command, the LG has called for a probe to uncover the facts. We await the report's findings next week."

In response, BJP MLA R. Pathania questioned the legitimacy of discussing the issue, asserting that it lies beyond the House's jurisdiction.

"My eight questions were disallowed because they pertain to the Lieutenant Governor or the Government of India. How can this matter be discussed here?" he queried.

On Friday, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

Point of View
