A Delhi Police head constable was allegedly assaulted by a group of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters on Monday while he was videographing proceedings in plain clothes during former Chief Minister and AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal's visit to Tilak Nagar in New Delhi, according to police sources. The officer was subsequently medically examined, and Delhi Police may register an FIR in connection with the incident.

What Happened at Tilak Nagar

According to Delhi Police sources, the head constable was recording the proceedings when a group of AAP supporters surrounded and allegedly attacked him. The visit itself was politically charged — Kejriwal, accompanied by Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh and AAP MLA Jarnail Singh, had arrived at Tilak Nagar to inspect a newly constructed road that had become the centre of a fresh political flashpoint between the AAP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Delhi government.

The Road Row That Sparked the Dispute

Kejriwal's Monday visit came a day after Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma allegedly slapped a youth, identified as Sahib Singh, during his own inspection of the same newly built road. The incident reportedly took place in the presence of AAP MLA Jarnail Singh. During his visit, Kejriwal demonstrated that sections of the freshly laid road surface could be pulled apart by hand, alleging serious irregularities in its construction.

'This road was constructed only a few days ago, yet it is completely coming apart just by hand. We have never seen a road like this being constructed in Delhi. We used to hear about such roads being built in remote villages and areas of the country. Delhi is the national capital. We also led Delhi for 10 years, but a road like this was never constructed during our tenure,' Kejriwal said.

Kejriwal's Demands and Allegations of Corruption

The AAP leader alleged large-scale corruption in the road's construction and called for a probe into the misuse of public funds. 'The roads built under the AAP government came with a five-year guarantee. Clearly, there has been a great deal of corruption in this, and there should be an investigation into where this money has gone,' he said. Kejriwal also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi dismiss and arrest Verma, and called for an apology from the Delhi minister.

Referring to Sunday's slapping incident, Kejriwal said: 'When BJP Minister Parvesh Verma came to Tilak Nagar on Sunday to inspect the newly constructed road, people showed him the road in his presence, and he pulled aside a young man, Sahib Singh, and slapped him. I want to tell him that this is not his father's country.'

Police Action on Both Sides

Delhi Police on Monday filed a non-cognisable report (NCR) against Minister Parvesh Verma for allegedly slapping a man during the road inspection. Separately, an FIR was registered against AAP MLA Jarnail Singh for allegedly obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duty. The possible FIR over the assault on the plain-clothes head constable adds a further layer of legal jeopardy to what has rapidly escalated into a multi-sided political and criminal dispute. Notably, this is the latest in a series of confrontations between AAP and the BJP as both parties continue to spar over governance in the capital following AAP's exit from power.

With legal proceedings potentially imminent on multiple fronts, the Tilak Nagar episode looks set to deepen the political standoff between the two parties in the weeks ahead.
