Why is Dalwai Defending Rahul Gandhi While Dismissing BJP Switch Rumors Around Shakeel Ahmad?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 27 (NationPress) Senior Congress figure Husain Dalwai on Tuesday criticized any form of intimidation or violence against individuals expressing their political beliefs, while firmly opposing former Congress member Shakeel Ahmad’s derogatory comments about senior leader Rahul Gandhi.
In response to Shakeel Ahmad’s recent claims of fearing for his safety after his critical remarks about the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Dalwai stated that resorting to coercion or aggression is intolerable in a democratic society.
“It is incorrect to attack someone in this manner,” he told IANS, stressing that political disagreements must be resolved through conversation and debate.
Dalwai also expressed strong disapproval of the language employed by Shakeel Ahmad regarding the Congress leadership. “You can critique Rahul Gandhi’s politics. You can even engage with him in conversation. However, labeling Rahul Gandhi as a coward is not accurate,” Dalwai remarked to IANS.
He affirmed that LoP Gandhi has always confronted the BJP directly. “If anyone is standing tall against the BJP, it is Rahul Gandhi,” he noted.
Regarding rumors that Shakeel Ahmad might switch to the BJP, Dalwai categorically rejected such assertions. “No, he will certainly not join the BJP,” he asserted. “I know him well — he is a deeply secular and committed person. I do not believe he would align himself with the BJP.”
Earlier on Tuesday, former Congress member Shakeel Ahmad had claimed that his life was under threat, days after he publicly labeled Rahul Gandhi as a “darpok (coward)” and an “insecure” politician.
Ahmad, a three-time MLA and two-term MP from Bihar, had departed from the Congress following the Bihar Assembly elections last year.
He claimed that he had been “secretly informed” by colleagues from his former party that the Congress leadership had allegedly instructed to “carry out an attack” at his residences in Patna and Madhubani under the pretense of protests and effigy burning.
This discourse occurs amid ongoing internal turmoil within the Congress, with dissenting voices and public critiques gaining attention before significant political events. Party leaders have reiterated the necessity for internal discussions to remain respectful while maintaining unity against the BJP at the national level.
