T20 World Cup: Coach Darren Sammy Voices Frustration Over Delayed Return for West Indies
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 5 (NationPress) Amid the West Indies facing delays in their return home following their exit from the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, head coach Darren Sammy conveyed his feelings by stating he “just want to go home.”
The two-time champions had their campaign abruptly concluded with a five-wicket loss to India during the Super Eights at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on March 1. Since that day, they have remained at their team hotel. Sammy took to his ‘X’ account on Thursday to express, “I just want to go home.”
In a subsequent post, Sammy provided an update regarding the team's departure, stating, “At least an update, tell us something. Today? Tomorrow? Next week? It’s been 5 days.”
The West Indies are among the teams stranded in India due to the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, which has resulted in the closure of airspace in West Asia. Earlier, Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced that the team's departure from India had been delayed due to restrictions in international airspace across the Gulf Region.
“These restrictions stem from the security threats associated with military actions in the Gulf Region, affecting numerous international flight paths and necessitating airlines to modify their schedules for safety,” the CWI explained.
“CWI is collaborating closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC), appropriate governmental bodies, and airline partners to ensure the safest and earliest travel arrangements for the team and support staff. The safety and well-being of our players, coaches, and officials are our utmost priority.”
“The squad is currently housed in India and is safe and well. We are continuously monitoring the situation and will provide more updates as confirmed travel arrangements are established,” the CWI added.
Similar to the West Indies, Zimbabwe concluded their T20 World Cup journey on March 1, suffering a five-wicket defeat against South Africa in their Super Eights match in New Delhi. They had planned to depart in three groups starting Monday, but this was canceled due to airspace restrictions.
On Wednesday, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) announced that the team was on its way back home from India in batches after the ICC arranged alternative travel plans. An ICC representative informed IANS that the Zimbabwe team would travel to Harare from New Delhi via Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
South Africa is also awaiting its travel arrangements after being defeated by New Zealand by nine wickets in the semi-final. If England is eliminated from the competition after losing their second semi-final to India in Mumbai, they will also need to arrange their travel back home.
