Mumbai, Feb 22 (NationPress) As the West Indies prepare to enter the Wankhede Stadium on Monday for their opening Super 8s encounter with Zimbabwe in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, they are treating this match with the same gravity as they would a contest against India, Australia, or any other top-tier team.

Having previously led the West Indies to victory in the T20 World Cup in both 2012 and 2016, Darren Sammy, now the head coach, is eager to steer the Caribbean team towards another title. Drawing from his rich experience as both a player and a coach, Sammy understands the importance of not underestimating any team, especially with challenging matches against India and South Africa on the horizon.

Finishing at the top of their preliminary group, the West Indies are set to kick off their Super 8s campaign against Zimbabwe, who have surprised many by topping Group B after defeating Australia and Sri Lanka.

This meeting was unexpected at the start of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. However, Sammy emphasized their commitment to treating the game with utmost seriousness, akin to matches against India or Australia, as every team that has reached this stage must be respected.

"Who said Zimbabwe does not belong here? Many believe the West Indies shouldn't be here either. In a World Cup, it's vital to respect every opponent. That’s the ethos I instill in my players. Respect the competition, but also believe in your skills and your execution," Sammy stated during a pre-match press conference.

"Tomorrow, we will approach the game just like we would against India, Australia, or any formidable opponent. Zimbabwe is exuding confidence and playing commendable cricket. T20 is a format where surprises are common; any team can emerge victorious on the day if they execute their plans effectively," Sammy added.

In a boost for the team, all-rounder Romario Shepherd, who missed the last group match due to injury, has been declared fit to participate in this crucial Super 8s clash. Shepherd had previously showcased his talent with a five-wicket haul, including a hat-trick, in their opening match against Scotland. His return is a significant advantage for the West Indies as they gear up for tougher matches ahead.

"He practiced well yesterday – bowled effectively and hit the ball cleanly. It’s great to have all players available for selection going into the Super 8 stage. I am excited to see all my players ready to fight for victory," Sammy remarked.

When asked about plans to counter Zimbabwe's tall pacer Blessing Muzarabani, Sammy acknowledged that they strategize for every opponent, recognizing Muzarabani as an X factor for this match.

"We prepare for every individual player. He is indeed an X factor. However, it's essential to respect the opposition while also being aware of our own strengths to neutralize their threats," Sammy explained.

Sammy also highlighted that the presence of Associate teams in the World Cup has been justified through their commendable performances, indicating that cricket is evolving. "This tournament features 20 teams, and if you look especially at our group, every team has won at least one match. The Associate teams have genuinely challenged the full members, showcasing the growth of the sport, particularly in shorter formats where an outstanding performance can determine the outcome," he stated.

"These teams have played impressively. Zimbabwe, having missed out on the last World Cup, seems to be well-led, with Sikandar showing confidence and setting an example. Their enthusiastic fan support amplifies their spirit. I can see how being underestimated can fuel their motivation. I look forward to tomorrow's match between two undefeated teams, hoping it will be entertaining, but with the West Indies emerging victorious," he concluded.

Sammy emphasized their focus on performance rather than their opponents. Regarding whether their past experiences in India, especially at Wankhede, would provide an edge, he dismissed this notion.

"No, it's simply a cricket match. Previous performances against Nepal or England have no relevance to tomorrow’s game. We face a new challenge each day and must continuously assess our strategies to ensure success. Though Zimbabwe will aim to do the same, the Super 8 stage is about representing your country, bringing excitement, and ultimately, I hope the West Indies will secure victory when the last ball is bowled," he stated.
