New Delhi, April 17 (NationPress) In a match filled with ups and downs, the Delhi Capitals (DC) showcased their composure to secure a victory against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a nail-biting Super Over, thereby ascending to the top of the points table at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday.
On a sluggish pitch, late innings contributions from captain Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs salvaged DC from a challenging situation, allowing them to set a challenging target of 188/5. In response, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana posed a significant threat to RR's victory with their aggressive knocks of 51 runs each. However, Mitchell Starc's brilliant bowling, defending nine runs in the last over, led to the game entering a Super Over for the first time since 2022 in the IPL.
In the Super Over, DC opted for Starc to bowl against Shimron Hetmyer and Riyan Parag. The pair managed to hit a boundary each off Starc, including one off a no-ball, but were run out on consecutive deliveries, setting a target of 12 runs for DC to chase.
DC began their chase with two runs on the first delivery before KL Rahul struck Sandeep Sharma for a four. Tristan Stubbs then sealed the deal by launching Sandeep over deep mid-wicket for six, clinching a thrilling victory for DC, marking their fourth triumph in a Super Over.
RR started their innings strongly with Sanju Samson and Jaiswal hitting sixes off Mukesh Kumar. Jaiswal showcased his batting prowess with a series of boundaries against Mitchell Starc. Despite being dropped on 20 by Ashutosh Sharma, Samson continued to dominate until a rib injury forced him to retire with a score of 31.
After RR concluded the power-play at 63/0, Axar Patel made a breakthrough by dismissing Riyan Parag with a slow delivery. Jaiswal maintained the aggression, reaching his third IPL fifty in just 34 balls, before falling to Axar's bowling.
Nitish Rana also contributed significantly, reaching his fifty in 26 balls, but Starc's decisive yorker eventually trapped him LBW for 51, giving DC a glimmer of hope. Despite a couple of boundaries from Dhurv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer, Starc's exceptional final over ensured the match proceeded to a Super Over, which DC won, delighting the home fans.
