Himachal Pradesh: Has the Deadline for Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana Been Extended for Farmers?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Shimla, Jan 7 (NationPress) In a significant relief for farmers in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, the deadline for securing insurance for wheat and barley crops under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) for the Rabi season has now been extended to January 15.
This extension comes in response to a request from the Himachal Pradesh Agriculture Department, which highlighted technical challenges that could prevent farmers from accessing the benefits of this crucial crop insurance scheme.
The original deadline was imminent, but considering the technical issues raised, the Union Agriculture Ministry decided to grant an extension at the behest of the state’s agriculture department. The primary aim is to ensure that no farmer misses out on the advantages offered by this scheme.
Agriculture Development Officer Manjeet Singh informed the press, saying, “I wish to convey to all farmers that the central government has set the new cut-off date to January 15, 2026. I encourage every farmer to insure their crops under this scheme to obtain compensation in the event of any damage.”
He pointed out that the insured amount for wheat and barley crops stands at Rs 60,000, with farmers required to pay only 1.5 percent of this as premium, while the rest will be covered by the Central and State Governments, ensuring that farmers do not face additional financial strain.
“The insured sum for both wheat and barley crops is Rs 60,000, and farmers need only pay 1.5 percent of this amount as premium,” he reiterated.
He further emphasized that the crop insurance scheme serves as a protective measure for farmers. In instances of crop loss due to adverse weather or other natural disasters, farmers can receive compensation, helping them stabilize their financial position. Therefore, timely enrollment in this scheme is crucial for farmers.
