New Delhi, Aug 19 (NationPress) After engaging with the residents of the stranded Yamuna Bazar colony, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed on Tuesday her commitment to being available 24/7 for the people of the city facing difficulties. She stated, “Wherever there is any pain or suffering, we stand with them,” emphasizing the government’s determination to prevent a flood-like scenario in the city.
“The water level was approaching 206 meters, leading to the current situation. However, it has stabilized, which is encouraging. I inspected the control room, and while water is entering, it is also flowing downstream. The situation is set to improve from this point on,” she noted.
“This is the lowest area on the Yamuna floodplain. There are no issues with water accumulation here, and it is expected that the water will recede by evening. The residents are also aware of this annual challenge,” she added.
She mentioned that residents have the option to relocate to safer areas, but for those who choose to stay, arrangements for food, water, and a medical relief camp have been made.
“The power supply has been disrupted, and we are working to provide solar power and illuminate the colony with floodlights to ensure safety after dark,” she stated.
According to projections, the water level of the Yamuna is likely to drop by evening. I have also assessed the riverbank where the water levels are elevated, she said.
“This is the peak water level. Everything will start to decline from here,” she assured.
On Monday, the Chief Minister reviewed flood management and preparedness in the Yamuna and nearby regions.
She informed that due to the water being released from the Hathni Kund Barrage in Haryana’s Yamuna Nagar, along with heavy rainfall in the Upper Yamuna region, the Central Water Commission has issued a warning that the Yamuna's water level in Delhi could rise to 206 meters.
The Chief Minister remarked that this year, the Delhi government initiated its flood preparedness measures well ahead of the monsoon season.
All departments are operational around the clock, and the situation is fully under control. The Chief Minister reassured Delhi’s citizens that there is no reason for concern — their safety is the government’s utmost priority, stated CM Gupta.
As part of relief and rescue operations, 14 boats have been deployed at strategic locations, according to an official announcement.
