Delhi CM Rekha Gupta launches 500+ MCD vehicles to boost city sanitation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Delhi President Harsh Malhotra on Saturday, 18 October 2025, launched over 500 vehicles for door-to-door waste collection and 250 battery-operated litter picker machines for Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wards, marking a significant push to overhaul the capital's sanitation infrastructure.
The launch event was held at Sarita Vihar in the presence of Mayor Pravesh Wahi, Deputy Mayor Monika Pant, and Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma.
Fleet Breakdown: What Was Launched
The initiative deployed a wide range of primary and secondary sanitation vehicles. For door-to-door waste collection, the fleet includes 428 auto-tippers, 128 e-rickshaws, and 25 Tata 407 vehicles. Secondary waste transportation was bolstered by 27 refuse compactors, 5 refuse collectors, and 30 hook loaders. Additionally, 100 compactor bins were released to improve waste storage capacity across the city.
The 250 battery-operated modern litter picker machines are intended for cleaning roads and public spaces across all 250 MCD wards — one machine per ward — representing a shift toward mechanised, low-emission sanitation.
What the Government Said
Chief Minister Gupta said the Delhi government is fully committed to equipping MCD with the resources needed to deliver better sanitation services citywide. BJP Delhi President Malhotra remarked that meaningful development in the capital had begun only after Gupta assumed office following BJP's Assembly election victory.
Yamuna Cleanliness Drive on 18 October
The vehicle launch coincides with a large-scale Yamuna riverbank cleanliness initiative scheduled for Sunday, 18 October. The Chief Minister's Office posted on X calling on citizens to join a mega cleanliness drive at 70 locations across Delhi at 7:30 am, urging residents to reach their nearest Yamuna ghat.
Chief Minister Gupta will personally lead volunteers at ITO Hathi Ghat-1, while Malhotra will head the drive at Gandhi Nagar Ghat. South Delhi MP Ramvir Bidhuri will lead at Kalindi Kunj bank, and New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj will participate at Ram Ghat.
Broader Context
Delhi has long struggled with waste management, consistently ranking poorly in national Swachh Survekshan assessments compared to cities such as Indore and Surat. The MCD, which manages sanitation across most of the capital, has faced persistent criticism over irregular garbage collection and overflowing community bins. This fleet expansion is among the largest single-day vehicle additions in recent MCD history, according to official statements. The accompanying Yamuna drive signals a dual focus on both daily waste logistics and ecological restoration — a combination that the BJP-led Delhi government appears to be positioning as a signature clean-city agenda ahead of future civic assessments.
