Well-planned cities will decide India's future, says Delhi L-G Sandhu
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu on Friday, 30 October 2026, said that urban planning will define the trajectory of India's development in Amrit Kaal, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision that only well-planned cities can secure the nation's future. He made the remarks while addressing a seminar for Young Planners organised to commemorate World Habitat Day, World Cities Day, and World Town Planning Day in New Delhi.
Cities as engines of opportunity and challenge
L-G Sandhu underlined the dual role Indian cities play in national progress. 'Cities are centres of economic activity, education, innovation, and employment. They attract people seeking better opportunities, and bring together talent, enterprise, and ideas,' he said. However, he cautioned that rapid urbanisation simultaneously strains land, housing, transport, water resources, and public infrastructure, making strategic planning an urgent national priority.
Integrated planning, not siloed thinking
The Lieutenant Governor stressed that housing, mobility, environmental protection, and access to public amenities must be addressed as interconnected concerns rather than isolated policy silos. He told young planners that the decisions they take today will shape the economic opportunities, environmental conditions, and quality of life available to future generations — framing planning as a form of intergenerational responsibility.
School visit and motivational address
Earlier on Friday, Sandhu addressed students, parents, and teachers at Delhi Police Public School, Safdarjung Enclave, during its Felicitation Ceremony, held in the presence of Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar and senior police officials. In a post on social media platform X, Sandhu wrote that he encouraged 'independent thinking, curiosity, responsible use of technology and discovering their strengths,' adding that exam results do not define a student's potential. Drawing on Prime Minister Modi's call to dream big, he urged students to 'embrace setbacks, pursue ambitious goals and uphold character, discipline and social responsibility.'
Delhi deregulation push reviewed
A day earlier, on Thursday, L-G Sandhu chaired a review of Phase-II of Delhi's Deregulation and Compliance Reduction exercise, aimed at cutting red tape for citizens and businesses alike. He stressed fast-tracking the Delhi Ease of Doing Business Bill, 2026, which proposes a 'Permitted until Prohibited' framework — a structural shift intended to make governance faster, more transparent, and citizen-centric. The review advances what Sandhu described as Prime Minister Modi's vision of Ease of Doing Business and Ease of Living.
What comes next
With the Delhi Ease of Doing Business Bill, 2026 flagged for fast-tracking, the capital's regulatory landscape could see significant changes in the months ahead. For urban planners, L-G Sandhu's seminar remarks signal that the administration intends to keep integrated city planning — not just business reform — at the centre of Delhi's governance agenda going forward.
