New Delhi, May 16 (NationPress) In just two months, Delhi is set to welcome 500 new electric buses, as confirmed by Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh on Friday. He emphasized the Delhi government’s dedication to developing a contemporary, environmentally friendly public transportation system.
“We are rapidly advancing our public transport transformation. Within the next two months, 500 e-buses will be operational on Delhi’s streets, and by the end of this year, an additional 1,000 will join them — providing cleaner and more efficient commuting options for everyone,” he stated following a review meeting regarding the introduction of e-buses in Delhi.
High-ranking officials from the Transport Department and representatives from notable bus concessionaires, such as PMI Electro Mobility, Switch Mobility, JBM, among others, were in attendance.
The Minister noted that the launch of these new e-buses marks a crucial milestone in establishing Delhi as the electric vehicle capital of India.
He urged officials, saying, “It is imperative that new electric buses are rolled out as soon as possible, so that the advantages of clean and efficient mobility are realized by the public without delay.”
“By introducing these non-polluting electric buses, we are decisively moving towards making Delhi the EV capital of the country. This initiative is not just about adding new vehicles; it’s about creating a greener and smarter future for all citizens,” he added.
During the meeting, the Transport Department highlighted that civil works at various depots and the electrification process are nearing completion.
Minister Singh urged bus concessionaires to expedite the delivery of electric buses and enhance the development of EV charging infrastructure at all key depots to ensure seamless deployment and operation.
He mentioned that a structured route rationalization plan is being put into action to effectively integrate electric DEVI mid-size EV buses into the current public transport network.
These e-buses will operate on shorter routes (approximately 12 km each), particularly in regions where longer buses encounter operational difficulties. This rationalization will enhance last-mile connectivity for DEVI buses, greatly benefiting Delhi citizens, especially in rural areas. He suggested that there should be broader promotion of DEVI buses and their routes.
