New Delhi, Dec 2 (NationPress) Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that the Delhi Government has implemented extensive measures to safeguard the homeless during the winter months.
After conducting a review meeting, the Chief Minister confirmed that sufficient night shelters are fully operational throughout the city.
Officials stated that Delhi currently boasts 197 permanent night shelters with the capacity to accommodate around 18,000 individuals. Out of the 250 temporary night shelters planned, 204 have already been established and equipped with necessary amenities.
Under this year’s Winter Action Plan, the Chief Minister has mandated that hospitals must not lack any blankets or essentials necessary to shield patients from the cold.
She also urged departments to identify and adopt measures to protect schoolchildren from the detrimental effects of low temperatures.
Additionally, she directed that Anganwadi and childcare centres ensure appropriate winter arrangements. Moreover, provisions for heaters and other protective gear for security personnel in government buildings have been mandated, as per a statement.
During the review at the Delhi Secretariat, attended by Chief Secretary Rajeev Verma and senior department officials, the Chief Minister was informed about the efforts to provide safe accommodation for the homeless and economically disadvantaged during the winter.
All shelters are operational and will undergo continuous monitoring until March 15 to make certain that no homeless individual faces any hardship.
Officials also updated the Chief Minister on the functioning of the 'Rain Basera' mobile app, which provides real-time information to ensure the safety of homeless individuals.
Post-meeting, the Chief Minister reaffirmed her government’s dedication: “No citizen should be forced to endure a cold winter night outdoors. Delhi’s night shelters are not just buildings; they represent dignity and safety.”
Each shelter is furnished with beds, mattresses, sheets, pillows, blankets, an electricity supply, mosquito-control devices, water coolers, CCTV, and security for women.
The Chief Minister noted that this year’s Winter Action Plan includes more robust measures compared to last year, broadening its reach to include not only the impoverished but also other vulnerable segments. Health officials have been tasked with ensuring that hospitals are well-stocked with blankets and winter protection for patients.
Emphasizing the importance of shielding schoolchildren from the cold to prevent health issues, officials have been instructed to explore various options, implementing them through CSR partnerships where feasible.
Furthermore, Anganwadi and childcare centres have also been directed to ensure sufficient winter protection arrangements.
