Democracy Suffocated in 1975, Congress Cannot Erase This Stigma: PM Modi References Emergency

New Delhi, Dec 14 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday mounted a significant offensive against the Congress party, highlighting the 1975 Emergency enforced under the leadership of former PM Indira Gandhi to challenge the grand old party's claims of being the ‘true guardians’ of democracy.
Concluding the two-day discussion on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution's adoption in Lok Sabha, PM Modi criticized past Congress administrations for their blatant neglect of the Constitution and the destruction of democracy, asserting that this trend began during the tenure of the nation’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
“The Emergency enforced by the Indira Gandhi government remains a dark chapter in the annals of Indian democracy. Citizens faced inhumane treatment and their fundamental rights were stripped away by that oppressive regime,” PM Modi remarked.
“The Congress government strangled democracy in 1975. This is a stain that Congress will never be able to wash away,” PM Modi emphasized in Lok Sabha.
Without directly naming Gandhi, the Prime Minister criticized the ‘one family’ that has governed the nation for nearly 55 years during the 75 years of India’s Independence.
“One family has governed the nation for 55 years and has repeatedly altered the Constitution. The first change to the Constitution was made by the country's first Prime Minister, and since then, numerous Congress Prime Ministers have followed the same approach to suppress and override the Constitution,” PM Modi stated.
PM Modi also recounted how the Gujarat government, while he was Chief Minister, initiated the celebration of Samvidhan Divas on November 26, 2000, making it the first state to do so.
He further expressed that it is the strength of the Constitution that enabled individuals like him to enter Parliament.
