Chennai, May 21 (NationPress) The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu is encountering significant backlash over a sexual exploitation case involving a local youth wing leader in Arakkonam, leading to political embarrassment and severe criticism from opposition parties.
The scandal has put the party leadership, including Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Youth Wing Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin, in a challenging position as public outrage intensifies.
The controversy ignited after a college student from Kavannur lodged a complaint alleging that R. Deivaseyal, the now-ousted Deputy Organiser of the DMK Youth Wing in Arakkonam Central Union, kidnapped and forcibly married her.
The victim further claimed that she endured continuous abuse and suggested that approximately 20 other young women faced similar exploitation.
The DMK leadership reacted swiftly by removing Deivaseyal from his post.
In a statement on Tuesday, Youth Wing Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin announced the appointment of M. Kaviyarasu, a resident of Arakkonam, as the new Deputy Organiser.
He urged local party members to provide full support to the newly appointed official.
Despite this damage-control measure, the matter has taken a political turn, with opposition, led by AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), launching a fierce criticism of the DMK.
"This is not an isolated incident. The DMK leadership must clarify how such predators are allowed to flourish within the party," Palaniswami stated, likening it to the notorious Pollachi sex scandal.
The AIADMK is organizing a large protest today in response.
Law enforcement has since filed charges against Deivaseyal under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including 296(b), 75(2), 82(2), and 351.
However, the accused remains elusive, raising concerns about enforcement effectiveness and the influence of political ties.
District police officials asserted that all legal protocols are being observed and cautioned against spreading unverified information on social media.
Public sentiment has sharply turned critical, with social media platforms inundated with posts denouncing the incident and demanding immediate justice.
Activists advocating for women's rights have called for an unbiased investigation and protection for the victim and potential witnesses. This scandal has not only embarrassed the DMK but also jeopardizes its standing among women voters and youth, a vital demographic ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
As calls intensify for the Chief Minister to address the situation, political analysts believe the party must exhibit transparency and accountability to mitigate the fallout.
