What Should Micro-Observers in Bengal Note About DOB Mismatches?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 25 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has instructed the appointed micro-observers overseeing the hearing sessions to remain particularly alert regarding discrepancies in dates of birth (DOBs) found in their records compared to the supporting documents submitted by the voters.
During a training session on Wednesday, clear directives were provided to the micro-observers concerning their responsibilities during the hearing sessions.
Sources from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal, elaborated that discrepancies in DOBs may arise during the hearings, where records from the Commission could differ from those on the identification documents provided by voters.
In these scenarios, micro-observers are tasked with documenting the DOB mismatches and reporting them to their superiors for further examination following the hearings, the sources indicated.
Additionally, micro-observers have been advised to verify the claims made by voters against the supporting documents presented during the sessions.
The objective is to ensure that the hearing sessions are thorough, ensuring that no legitimate voter is omitted from the final voter list while preventing any fraudulent voters from remaining included, as stated by sources in the CEO's office.
The initial phase of the hearing sessions commences on December 27, targeting unmapped voters—those lacking connections to the 2002 list through either self-mapping or progeny mapping. This group consists of approximately 30 lakh individuals.
In the subsequent phase, hearings will be conducted for doubtful voters whose unusual family tree data have been identified in the progeny mapping, totaling around 1.36 crore cases.
The last SIR conducted in West Bengal occurred in 2002.
The draft voters' list was made public on December 16, with the final list to be released on February 14 of the next year. Following this, the ECI will announce the dates for the crucial Assembly elections in West Bengal taking place next year.
