Key Takeaways

Deadline for completing hearings is February 7.
Final voters' list will be published on February 14.
The SIR is part of a national initiative across 12 states and UTs.
Prior hearings have focused on 'unmapped' voters.

Kolkata, Jan 30 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced a shift in the duties of micro-observers involved in the assessment of hearings related to claims and objections concerning the draft voters' list in West Bengal, marking a significant phase in the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR).

Currently, the micro-observers have been assigned to various hearing centers to ensure that the sessions comply with the guidelines established by the ECI.

However, sources from the office of the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) indicated that starting from Monday, these observers will be tasked with monitoring whether the identity documents provided by voters during the hearings are uploaded correctly and in accordance with ECI-mandated standards.

"The micro-observers will oversee and confirm that only the documents specified by the Commission are uploaded. They will serve as the initial screening level. After the documents are uploaded, special roll observers will perform a thorough verification to filter out cases with unapproved documents," said an insider from the CEO's Office.

This decision was made during an extensive virtual meeting involving the full ECI bench, along with senior officials from the CEO's office and special roll observers.

On the same day, the ECI emphasized that all tasks related to completing the hearing sessions and uploading the necessary documents must adhere to the deadline of February 7.

The definitive voters' list for West Bengal is set to be released on February 14.

Following this, the ECI’s full bench will visit Kolkata, after which the dates for the critical Assembly elections in West Bengal, scheduled for later this year, will be revealed.

The SIR has been in progress across 12 states and Union Territories, including West Bengal, since November 4.

The draft voters' list was unveiled on December 16, paving the way for the hearing phase regarding the SIR.

During the initial stage of the SIR, hearings for the “unmapped” voters were successfully completed.

Currently, hearings are ongoing for cases involving “logical discrepancies”.

Point of View

This decision by the ECI highlights a proactive approach to ensuring electoral integrity in West Bengal. By shifting the focus of micro-observers to document verification, the Commission aims to enhance transparency and trust in the voter registration process. It reflects a commitment to uphold democratic values and ensure every eligible voter's voice is heard.
