Has the ECI Issued a Second Directive to Bengal Regarding Police Transfers Ahead of Elections?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 9 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a new directive to the West Bengal government, requiring the completion of police officer transfers across various levels by February 15. This request comes as the state prepares for the significant Assembly elections scheduled for later this year.
The directive was directed to the office of the Additional Chief Electoral Officer (ACEO) for West Bengal and was subsequently forwarded to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home and Hill Affairs Department, as per sources from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal.
In this communication, the state administration has been urged to finalize the police transfer process by February 15 and to provide a compliance report to the Commission.
This marks the second such communication from the ECI on the subject; a similar directive was sent earlier in January, urging immediate action on police transfers.
In another development, the Supreme Court issued a show-cause notice to the West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP) in response to allegations from the ECI regarding intimidation and disruption during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant also instructed that Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) be allowed an additional week post-February 14 to complete the necessary scrutiny and make decisions.
Initially, February 7 was set as the deadline for addressing claims and objections related to the draft electoral rolls, with February 14 marked for the publication of the final voters' list.
“As per the Supreme Court’s ruling today, the publication of the final voters' list will now be delayed until at least February 21, but it will definitely be released by the end of this month,” indicated a source within the CEO’s office.
Following the release of the final voters' list, a full bench of the Commission plans to visit West Bengal to assess the situation. Subsequently, the polling dates for the critical Assembly elections later this year will be announced.
