New Delhi, Feb 26 (NationPress) The electoral authorities in West Bengal have been mandated to ensure the submission of all outstanding verification documents pertaining to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by 5 p.m. on Thursday.

This directive was issued by the Supreme Court on Wednesday, instructing officials to provide the remaining documents to the appropriate judicial officers overseeing the SIR process by 5 p.m. today, February 26.

A bench led by the Chief Justice of India (CJI), Surya Kant, specified that a Madhyamik (Class 10) admit card could be accepted alongside the pass certificate for verification.

The bench, which included Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, clarified further in a continuation of its comprehensive order from Tuesday after senior advocate Dama Seshadri Naidu, representing the Election Commission of India (ECI), brought the matter to attention.

The apex court ordered that all documents referred to in paragraph 3(iii) of the February 24 order, which were received before February 14 but remain unuploaded, must be promptly handed over to the presiding judicial authorities.

"In continuation of the order dated 24.02.2026, it is further directed that all documents mentioned in para 3(iii) of the order dated 24.02.2026, which have not yet been uploaded and were received on or before 14.02.2026, must be submitted to the Presiding Judicial Officers by the relevant EROs/AEROs by tomorrow, 26.02.2026, by 5:00 P.M.," the CJI-led bench stated.

To clarify the types of documents that can be utilized for verifying voters under the "logical discrepancy/unmapped category," the order noted: "Para 3(iii)(c) of the order dated 24.02.2026 is further clarified to state that a Madhyamik (Class-10) Admit Card may be used along with the Madhyamik Pass Certificate to verify the candidate's date of birth and parentage."

The latest directives come after the apex court, exercising its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution, authorized the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to appoint additional judicial officers, including Civil Judges (Senior Division) and Civil Judges (Junior Division) with at least three years of experience, to hasten the adjudication of nearly 50 lakh claims and objections arising from the SIR process.

The Supreme Court also permitted the Calcutta High Court to seek support from the High Courts of Jharkhand and Orissa, making it clear that while the deadline for releasing the final electoral roll is February 28, the ECI may issue supplementary lists if verification of all cases is not finalized by that date.

It further emphasized that voters included in subsequent supplementary lists "shall be regarded as part of the final list published on 28.02.2026."

Point of View

The Supreme Court's order signifies the judiciary's active role in facilitating electoral integrity. The requirement for timely submission of documents reflects the importance of maintaining transparency and accountability within the electoral framework, especially in a democratic setup like India.
