Will the Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Finalize the New Date for Voter List Publication Today?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 10 (NationPress) The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, is set to engage in an important meeting with the full bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday to determine the revised date for the release of the final voters’ list in the state, which will conclude the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
This meeting holds great significance as it follows a directive from the Supreme Court—led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant—which mandated the ECI to provide Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) an additional week beyond February 14 to finalize the scrutiny and make decisions regarding the publication of the final voters’ list.
Agarwal arrived in Delhi late Monday night, and his discussions with the ECI's full bench are scheduled for Tuesday. “In addition to finalizing the date for the final voters list, the CEO will also address the ECI on the preparations for the Assembly elections in the state this year, including the number of phases for polling and the requirement of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF),” revealed an insider from the CEO’s office.
Notably, the CEO's office has already proposed a single-phase polling for this election, although the ultimate decision lies with the Commission.
The previous deadline for addressing claims and objections related to the draft voters’ list was set for February 7, which established February 14 as the publication date for the final list.
“However, due to the Supreme Court's order on Monday, the publication of the final voters’ list will not occur before February 21. It will certainly be released before the end of this month, or by the latest, the last day of this month,” stated an insider from the CEO’s office.
Once the final voters’ list is published, the full bench of the Commission will visit West Bengal to assess the situation. Following this, the polling dates for the significant Assembly elections in the state will be announced.
