Will Bengal's Final Voters' List Be Published on February 28?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 20 (NationPress) The definitive voters' list for West Bengal is set to be released on February 28, as confirmed by Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Manoj Kumar Agarwal to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar. This list will intentionally exclude instances of "logical discrepancies", which are to be referred to judicial officers for resolution in accordance with a directive from the Supreme Court.
Sources within the CEO's office indicate that this assurance was communicated on Friday evening after the Supreme Court mandated the involvement of both serving and retired judicial officers to oversee the resolution of claims and objections stemming from the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the election-ready West Bengal.
Reportedly, the Chief Election Commissioner reached out to the West Bengal CEO to confirm whether the Supreme Court's ruling would necessitate delaying the publication of the final electoral rolls.
“The CEO reassured the CEC that the final voters’ list will be released punctually on February 28, with the exception of cases slated for judicial review. Additional lists reflecting decisions on these cases will be published later,” stated a senior official from the CEO's office.
Initially, the final voters’ list was slated for release on February 14. However, this date was postponed to February 28 to provide more time for thorough examination and validation of claims and objections.
Earlier today, the CEO, along with other officials, convened a virtual review meeting with district magistrates, who also serve as district electoral officers (DEOs), to evaluate the progress of the revision process across the state.
During this meeting, the CEO emphasized the need for swift progress in the scrutiny process and cautioned that any further delays or lackadaisical attitudes would be unacceptable, according to sources.
Officials were instructed to prioritize document verification and scrutiny to ensure the completion of the revision process within the designated timeframe.
Some district electoral officers reported to the CEO that they would need an extra four to five days to finalize scrutiny processes within their areas, as per sources.
The deadline for concluding the scrutiny process under the Special Intensive Revision was previously set for February 21.
The Special Intensive Revision aims to investigate claims, objections, and discrepancies in the electoral rolls ahead of the forthcoming elections in the state, with the Election Commission striving for precision and transparency in the final voters’ list.
