Kolkata, March 7 (NationPress) The ongoing judicial examination of voter documents categorized as ‘logical discrepancy’ under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal is expected to extend for at least another month, or possibly longer, as per insights from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office of West Bengal. A source from the CEO’s office revealed, “The total cases of 'logical discrepancy' awaiting judicial examination exceed 60 lakh. As of Friday night, the adjudication has been finalized for approximately 7.50 lakh cases. We anticipate that an additional 1,00,000 cases could be resolved by Saturday night. Considering the current progress, we project that the adjudication process will require at least another month.”

The official also mentioned that the speed of the judicial evaluation is likely to improve significantly with the addition of 200 judicial officers from neighboring states Jharkhand and Odisha, starting Monday. This will elevate the total number of judicial officers engaged in this process to 732.

“Our estimation of needing one more month to wrap up the judicial adjudication is quite conservative, as we expect the pace of work to enhance further with the incoming officers,” the source added.

A pressing question has emerged regarding whether the Election Commission of India (ECI) will announce polling dates for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state only after completing the judicial adjudication or if it will declare the schedule prior to the conclusion of the exercise.

Further clarity on this issue may be expected following a significant hearing at the Supreme Court on March 10.

The ECI's full bench is set to arrive in Kolkata on Sunday night, with a busy agenda planned for the next two days to review both the current judicial adjudication process and the preparations for the Assembly elections scheduled for later this year.

Most of the 200 judicial officers coming from Jharkhand and Odisha will be stationed in Kolkata, while a few will also serve in other major district towns such as Bardhaman in East Burdwan district, Asansol in West Burdwan district, Kharagpur in West Midnapore district, and Siliguri in Darjeeling district.

Point of View

The extended timeline for the judicial adjudication in West Bengal raises significant questions about electoral preparedness. The ECI's decision, influenced by the judiciary's progress, could have far-reaching implications for the state's upcoming Assembly elections.
