Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 6 (NationPress) A contingent of 200 judicial officers from the neighboring states of Jharkhand and Odisha is set to arrive in West Bengal by Saturday. They will commence their involvement in the ongoing judicial adjudication of voters' documents flagged under the 'logical discrepancy' category by the Election Commission of India (ECI) starting March 9.
The officers will participate in a comprehensive two-day training program focused on the judicial adjudication process this weekend, after which they will join the current team of judicial officers engaged in the ongoing efforts, as reported by sources from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal.
With the addition of these officers, the total number of judicial personnel involved in the adjudication will rise to 732. Most of the incoming officers will be stationed in Kolkata, while a select few will be assigned to major districts including Bardhaman in East Midnapore, Asansol in West Burdwan, Kharagpur in West Midnapore, and Siliguri in Darjeeling, according to the CEO's office.
Accommodations for these officers have been arranged close to the airport in Kolkata and key railway stations across the city and district towns.
In addition, two significant developments concerning the judicial adjudication aspect of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and the readiness for the upcoming Assembly elections are anticipated next week, particularly on Monday and Tuesday.
The full bench of the ECI, led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, is expected to arrive in Kolkata on the night of March 8, with a busy agenda to assess both the ongoing judicial exercise and the preparations for the forthcoming Assembly polls.
A pivotal hearing regarding the SIR and related judicial adjudication is scheduled to take place at the Supreme Court on March 10, which falls on Tuesday.
The final voters' list for West Bengal, excluding cases referred for judicial adjudication, was published on February 28. A supplementary list will be released in due course as per directives from the Apex Court.
Over 60 lakh cases were flagged for judicial adjudication, and as of Thursday night, approximately five lakh cases had been processed, according to the latest statistics from the CEO’s office.
