34% of Completed Voter Judicial Adjudications Found Excludable

Synopsis

In a significant update from Kolkata, it has been revealed that 34% of voters undergoing judicial adjudication for logical discrepancies have been marked for exclusion from the voters’ list. This process is crucial ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

Key Takeaways

34% of completed adjudications found excludable.
Total of 60 lakh cases identified under logical discrepancies.
Adjudication process completed for 15 lakh cases.
Voters can appeal exclusions to the Appellate Tribunal.
Next supplementary voters' list may be released next week.

Kolkata, March 14 (NationPress) The Judicial Officers tasked with the judicial adjudication of voters classified under the “logical discrepancy” category have successfully finished the adjudication for 25 percent of the voters referred for judicial arbitration by Friday night.

Among these, 34 percent of the completed adjudications have been deemed excludable from the voters’ list up to this point.

“A total of just over 60 lakh cases were identified under the “logical discrepancy” category and subsequently referred for judicial adjudication. By Friday night, the process was complete for 15 lakh cases, which represents 25 percent of the total cases referred,” an insider from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office of West Bengal shared.

“Out of those 15 lakh cases, slightly more than five lakh have been classified as excludable, which is approximately 34 percent of the adjudicated cases to date,” the insider added.

This indicates that the total number of voters excluded as of Friday night has reached 63 lakh. Additionally, 59 lakh names categorized as “deceased,” “shifted,” “duplicate,” and “missing” have already been removed from the draft voters’ list published in December of the previous year.

Voters facing exclusion will have the chance to appeal to the Appellate Tribunal following the latest directive from the Supreme Court.

The insider noted that 732 judicial officers, including 100 each from neighboring Jharkhand and Odisha, are diligently working to expedite the judicial process.

“It is likely that the first supplementary list based on these findings may be released next week,” added the CEO office insider.

Last week, the full bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI), led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, visited Kolkata. During a media interaction, Kumar expressed confidence that the judicial adjudication process would conclude prior to the significant Assembly elections in West Bengal later this year, ensuring every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate in the upcoming polls.

The final voters’ list in West Bengal, excluding the 60 lakh cases referred for judicial adjudication, was published on February 28. As per the Supreme Court's directive, supplementary lists will be released in accordance with the progress of the judicial adjudication.

Point of View

The ongoing judicial adjudication process highlights the significant efforts being made to ensure electoral integrity. As the elections approach, the timely completion of this process is imperative for maintaining public trust and ensuring that eligible voters can participate in the democratic process.
