Bengal Elections: Nearly 90 Lakh Voter Names Expected to Be Removed Post Judicial Review

Synopsis

In a significant electoral development, the Election Commission of India estimates that close to 90 lakh names may be removed from the voter list following extensive judicial review. This article explores the implications and processes involved in this extensive voter list update.

Key Takeaways

The Election Commission estimates nearly 90 lakh deletions.
63,66,952 names were removed from the last published voters' list.
A judicial review process is ongoing for 16 lakh voters.
The Bengal elections are set for April 23 and April 29.
Over 700 judicial officers are working on the review.

Kolkata, March 31 (NationPress) According to the average daily rates at which voters' names are being removed due to the ongoing judicial review of those identified with "logical discrepancies," the Election Commission of India (ECI) anticipates that nearly 90 lakh names will be deleted by the conclusion of this process.

On Tuesday, a source from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal elaborated on how this estimated deletion figure was calculated. The final voters' list, released on February 28, already saw 63,66,952 names eliminated primarily due to categories such as "deceased," "shifted," "missing," and "duplicate" voters.

“The final list excluded 60,00,675 cases that were sent for judicial review. During this review process, it has been observed that the average daily deletion rates have ranged from 40 to 45 percent for cases that have already been adjudicated. Based on this average, we project that the total deletions will approach 90 lakh," the insider stated.

It is important to note that this projection is based purely on the average daily deletion statistics from the judicial review process. Voters whose names are slated for deletion will have the chance to appeal to one of the 19 Appellate Tribunals established for this purpose.

As of now, reports indicate that the judicial review process is yet to be finalized for approximately 16 lakh voters, with the Commission expressing confidence that it will conclude within the current week.

Currently, over 700 judicial officers, including 100 from neighboring Odisha and Jharkhand, are actively engaged in this review process, striving to complete it as swiftly as possible.

The two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal are scheduled for April 23 and April 29. The first phase will see voting in 152 Assembly constituencies, while the second phase will involve 142 seats. The results will be announced on May 4.

The nomination phase has commenced following the ECI's election notification issued on Monday.

Point of View

The anticipated removal of nearly 90 lakh names from the voter list underscores the importance of electoral integrity and the necessity for a thorough review process. The Election Commission's proactive measures aim to enhance the credibility of the electoral framework in West Bengal.
