Kolkata, April 7 (NationPress) The judicial adjudication phase for voters in West Bengal has officially wrapped up after midnight on Monday, leading the Election Commission of India (ECI) to project that approximately 91 lakh names will be removed from the electoral rolls in the state.

It's important to note that this number may see a slight increase as the ECI finalizes its data, particularly since the process of obtaining e-signatures from judicial officers is still pending for a small fraction of the cases that underwent judicial review.

According to the statistics shared by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, out of the 60,06,675 cases submitted for judicial adjudication, decisions have been finalized for 59,84,512 cases, with e-signatures affixed to them.

From this total, 27,16,393 voters have been classified as “excludable” and thus marked for deletion by the judicial officers, bringing the current total of deleted voters in West Bengal to 90,83,345.

Prior to the issuance of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) notification for West Bengal in November of the previous year, the state's voter population was recorded at 7,66,37,529. The draft list published in December showed 58,20,899 names deleted, while the final list on February 28 indicated an increase to 63,66,952.

“With 27,16,393 cases now categorized as excludable, the total number of voters removed during the entire SIR initiative has escalated to 90,83,345. The e-signature process is still outstanding for 22,163 cases, and further deletions may occur once that is settled,” stated an official from the CEO’s office.

Voters whose names have been identified as “excludable” during this adjudication will have the chance to appeal at any of the 19 Appellate Tribunals established for this purpose.

Data from the CEO’s office reveals that the highest number of excludable cases arose from the minority-heavy Murshidabad district, where 4,55,137 names were removed. This was followed by North 24 Parganas with 3,25,666 deletions, and the minority-majority district of Malda with 2,39,375 deletions.

The two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal are set for April 23 and April 29, with voting for 152 Assembly constituencies in the first phase and the remaining 142 seats in the second phase. Results will be announced on May 4.

Point of View

The significant deletion of voter names in West Bengal raises critical questions about electoral integrity and representation. The judicial process, while necessary, highlights issues within the voter registration system that need addressing to ensure fair elections.
