Kolkata, Feb 6 (NationPress) More than 50,000 "unmapped" voters and over 3.5 lakh voters categorized as "logical discrepancy" cases in West Bengal have yet to appear for hearings regarding their claims and objections to the draft voters’ list by Friday evening. This absence comes despite multiple notifications, and these voters risk removal from the final voters' list.

The number of "unmapped" voters called for hearings was 31,68,426. Of these, slightly over 50,000, which equates to 1.57 percent, failed to attend despite numerous notices and have already been flagged by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) as candidates for deletion from the final list.

The total identified as “logical discrepancy” cases summoned for hearings amounts to 94,49,132. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is currently conducting this hearing process and is optimistic about concluding it by the set deadline of February 7.

So far, just over 3.5 lakh, or 3.70 percent, have not shown up.

A source from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal indicated that before finalizing deletions, individual notifications will be dispatched to absentee voters explaining the reasons behind the proposed removal.

Unmapped voters are those who could not establish a link with the 2002 voters’ list through either “self-mapping” or “progeny mapping.”

Conversely, “logical discrepancy” cases arise when irregular family-tree data is found during “progeny” mapping.

The hearing process must conclude by February 7, with the final voters’ list set to be released on February 14.

Currently, only about 15 of the 294 Assembly constituencies in West Bengal have incomplete hearings. In such instances, the Commission may extend the hearing period by a few days.

When the draft voters’ list was released in December of the previous year, 58,20,899 voters were removed after being identified as deceased, relocated, or duplicates.

With the final voters’ list publication on February 14, the true number of deletions will be disclosed.

Following this release, the ECI's full bench will visit West Bengal to evaluate the situation and subsequently announce the polling dates for the Assembly elections scheduled for later this year.

Point of View

The situation in West Bengal regarding the 'unmapped' voters and 'logical discrepancy' cases raises significant concerns about electoral integrity. The absence of these voters at hearings could undermine the democratic process. It is crucial for the Election Commission to ensure transparency and fairness in this process, prioritizing communication with affected voters to uphold their rights and maintain public trust in the electoral system.
