Is 1.6% of Unmapped Voters in West Bengal Set for Deletion from Electoral Roll?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 6 (NationPress) Approximately 1.6 percent of the recognized "unmapped" voters failed to appear for hearings with necessary identity documentation validating their voting eligibility. Consequently, these individuals have been marked by the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) as candidates for removal from the final voters' list.
The total count of unmapped voters summoned for hearings was 31,68,426. Out of this number, just over 50,000 (equivalent to 1.57 percent of the total unmapped voters) did not attend the hearings despite receiving multiple notifications, thus leading to their identification for deletion by the EROs, as reported by sources from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal.
According to sources within the CEO's office, “The hearing sessions for the unmapped voters have concluded, and we are currently processing hearings for 'logical discrepancy' cases. It is now confirmed that 1.57 percent of the unmapped voters will be removed from the final voters' list. We are now awaiting the outcomes of the hearings for logical discrepancies.”
Unmapped voters are those who could not establish a connection with the 2002 voters' list via either “self-mapping” or “progeny mapping.”
Conversely, “logical discrepancy” cases refer to those where unusual family tree data were uncovered during progeny mapping.
The overall number of voters categorized as “logical discrepancy” cases and called for hearings stands at 94,49,132. Hearings for these cases are ongoing, and the Election Commission of India is optimistic about concluding these processes by the set deadline of February 7.
It’s important to note that when the draft voters' list was released in West Bengal last December, it resulted in the removal of 58,20,899 voters identified as deceased, relocated, or duplicates.
Once the final voters' list is published on February 14, the precise count of voters removed will be disclosed.
Following the release of the final voters' list, a full commission from the ECI will visit West Bengal to evaluate the situation. Subsequently, the Commission will announce polling dates for the vital Assembly elections in West Bengal scheduled for later this year.
