Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 6 (NationPress) - In a significant move, Trinamool Congress's general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee addressed a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar late Friday, urging for the daily release of supplementary voter lists. This request follows the publication of the final voter list on February 28, which did not include 60 lakh cases pending judicial adjudication concerning voters identified under the “logical discrepancy” category.
The final voter list for West Bengal was released on February 28, excluding those cases currently under judicial review. According to earlier directives from the Supreme Court, the supplementary list is to be made available in due course.
Banerjee's letter emphasizes the need for these supplementary lists to be published daily, reflecting the ongoing judicial adjudication process.
In the correspondence, a copy of which is with IANS, Banerjee expressed concerns regarding transparency and adherence to procedural norms in the electoral roll publication process for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections in West Bengal.
He highlighted that there has been no clear communication confirming that voters included via the daily supplementary rolls will be integrated into the final electoral roll.
Moreover, the letter pointed out a lack of compliance with the Supreme Court's orders mandating the daily release of supplementary electoral rolls based on adjudication results.
Banerjee asserted that the absence of transparent decisions by adjudicating authorities regarding claims and objections is not accessible to the public, which contravenes the Supreme Court's directives.
He also raised the issue that without detailed explanations for why a voter's name was rejected or removed, citizens are denied the chance to pursue legal remedies.
In response, the Trinamool Congress stated, "Our National General Secretary has called for immediate corrective measures to ensure transparency, fairness, and strict compliance with judicial mandates in the electoral process. We will continue our fight to protect the democratic rights of the people of Bengal."
