Trinamool Congress Appeals to Calcutta HC Chief Justice on Candidate Cases
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 27 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress has reached out to Calcutta High Court's Chief Justice Sujoy Paul regarding their concern for 11 candidates whose cases are currently under judicial review, leaving their status uncertain. In the correspondence penned by Chandrima Bhattacharya, the Minister of State for Finance (Independent Charge) in West Bengal, the party detailed the names of these candidates and urged the Chief Justice to prioritize the judicial proceedings in these matters.
The letter further appealed for intervention from the Chief Justice to prompt the Election Commission of India (ECI) to provide a clear outline for the reasons behind the exclusion of voters identified during the adjudication process.
Moreover, the Trinamool Congress requested that supplementary lists be issued daily. The first of these lists was made public earlier this week, with expectations for the second to follow on Friday.
However, as of the filing of this report, there had been no updates from either the Election Commission or the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal regarding the release of the second supplementary list.
It remains to be seen whether this forthcoming list will include names cleared up until Thursday night or those processed by Friday evening.
As of Thursday night, the judicial adjudication for approximately 36 lakh voters had been completed, representing about 60 percent of the 60 lakh cases referred for review, according to sources from the CEO’s office.
To recall, the final voter list in West Bengal—excluding the 60 lakh cases under judicial adjudication—was published on February 28. It was decided that supplementary lists would be generated based on the progression of the adjudication process.
Voters identified as excludable by the judicial officers during this process will have the opportunity to appeal to any of the 19 Appellate Tribunals established for this purpose.
