Kolkata, March 27 (NationPress) The second supplementary list concerning judicial adjudication cases in West Bengal was released on Friday at approximately 11:30 p.m.

This list can be accessed through the websites of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal.

However, specifics regarding the second supplementary list—including the overall number of cases reviewed and the tally of names deemed excludable—were not promptly disclosed, as the ECI did not share any official statistics with the media.

Sources from the CEO’s office indicated that approximately 37 lakh names out of over 60 lakh cases referred for judicial adjudication have been approved. Yet, the proportion of these 37 lakh names that have been classified as excludable remains undisclosed.

Individuals whose names are excluded during the adjudication will have the option to appeal to one of the 19 Appellate Tribunals set up for this purpose. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has confirmed that the Trinamool Congress will offer legal assistance to those whose names are removed during this process, as well as arranging legal representation for them.

The initial supplementary list was released shortly after midnight on March 23.

To recap, the final voters' list in West Bengal—excluding the 60 lakh cases referred for adjudication—was published on February 28. It was established that supplementary lists would be issued in accordance with the progress of the adjudication.

Before the notification of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was issued for West Bengal in November of the previous year, the total number of voters registered in the state was 7,66,37,529. In the draft voters' list published in December, 58,20,899 names were removed. By the final voters' list published on February 28, this number had risen to 63,66,952.

Following the release of the first supplementary list on March 23, it was reported that the total number of deleted voters had soared to nearly 77 lakh.

Point of View

The release of the second supplementary list for judicial adjudication cases in West Bengal highlights significant procedural gaps. While some names have been cleared, the lack of transparency regarding the adjudication process raises questions about electoral integrity and voter rights.
