Kolkata, Aug 8 (NationPress) Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress and the newly designated leader of the party’s Parliamentary team in the Lok Sabha, declared on Friday that he will mobilize a massive protest outside the Election Commission of India if even a single voter’s name is removed from the electoral rolls in West Bengal.
“Should any name be expunged from West Bengal’s voters’ list, we will coordinate a ‘gherao’ of the ECI’s office, bringing lakhs of demonstrators. The BJP has been treating West Bengal as a 'test case' for its political agendas since 2014, when they assumed power at the national level. However, their 'test case' experiments have consistently failed in every election. Now, they seem to be attempting to remove the names of the underprivileged from the voters’ lists. The ECI is complicit in this scheme orchestrated by the BJP,” Banerjee stated to reporters outside the Kolkata airport after returning from Delhi.
During the discussion about the special intensive revision proposed by the ECI earlier this week, Banerjee highlighted that leaders from all opposition parties condemned the commission’s behavior as being influenced by the BJP.
“On August 11, a delegation from the opposition INDIA bloc, including members from AITC, will approach the Election Commission to voice our grievances,” he added.
He further accused the Union government of withholding funds that rightfully belong to the West Bengal government for the MGNREGA program, despite clear court directives.
“Moreover, the Rs 2,500 crore allocated for the Jal Jeevan Mission in Bengal has been put on hold. A group of our MPs plans to engage with both the Union Minister of Rural Development and the Union Minister of Jal Shakti to demand clarity on the reasons for the halting of Bengal’s funds,” he concluded.
