Kolkata, Aug 7 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress General Secretary and the newly-appointed leader of the party’s Parliamentary team in the Lok Sabha, Abhishek Banerjee, fiercely criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday. This came in response to the ECI’s directive to West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant earlier this week, which called for the immediate suspension of four election officers and the filing of FIRs against them.
These officers allegedly participated in the improper inclusion of names on the electoral rolls for two Assembly seats across two districts in the state.
“The ECI is exceeding its jurisdiction and intruding upon the state government’s operations. The ECI’s authority should be invoked only after the election dates are proclaimed, and the Model Code of Conduct is in effect. With almost ten months until the elections in West Bengal, the commission is prematurely intervening,” Banerjee stated to reporters outside Kolkata Airport before departing for New Delhi to participate in the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament.
He further accused the ECI of acting under the influence of the BJP, claiming, “The BJP is attempting to manipulate the ECI to ensure that all Bengali-speaking citizens are disenfranchised in the upcoming elections. The current actions of the commission are disgraceful and beyond their mandate.”
Later, he is set to attend a meeting with all allies of the Opposition INDIA Bloc.
Before his departure to New Delhi, Banerjee also took a jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the recent decision by the US government to impose a 50 percent tariff on India, the highest among any nation.
“Questions should be directed at him, who has posed for photos with Donald Trump and those who supported Trump in Texas. This tariff could severely impact the nation’s economy if implemented. It represents a diplomatic setback, and India must respond promptly. The country that boasts a 56-inch chest is now being challenged by other nations,” Banerjee remarked.
He also noted that neither West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee nor the state government ever invited or campaigned for Donald Trump. “While Trump claims the Indian economy is in decline, I disagree. I would argue that it is in critical condition,” Abhishek Banerjee concluded.
