Final Voters’ List Release After SIR Hearing in West Bengal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 28 (NationPress) The hearing concerning the "logical discrepancies" discovered during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal has officially concluded, setting the stage for the release of the final voters’ list today.
Throughout the revision process, over 58 lakh names—including those of deceased, duplicate, and relocated voters—were identified as eligible for removal and have been excluded from the draft list published in December.
The updated voters’ list will introduce two new categories: “under adjudication” and “deleted”, in addition to the names of verified voters.
Manoj Kumar Agarwal, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, informed the media on Thursday that the “under adjudication” category will include names of voters whose identity documents remain under consideration by specially appointed judicial officers, as mandated by the Supreme Court.
"In the final voters’ list, individuals in this category will be recorded as 'under adjudication'," he stated.
It has been reported that supplementary lists will be issued subsequently, featuring the names of voters in the “under adjudication” category, whose cases will be settled by judicial officers during the adjudication process.
The third category in the final voters’ list will consist of those voters who were excluded throughout the entire Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process that began in November of the previous year. Names of these excluded voters will be categorized as “deleted”, according to Agarwal.
Sources within the CEO's office revealed that these three categories in the final voters’ list aim to enhance transparency in the electoral system and to inform voters about their current status. However, the Commission has yet to reach a final verdict on many voters classified under the “logical discrepancy” category, which pertains to cases where unusual family-tree data was observed during “progeny mapping”.
At the time of the SIR announcement, West Bengal had 7.66 crore voters. The revision led to the removal of more than 58 lakh names, including those of the deceased, absent, duplicate, or untraceable. Consequently, the draft list released in December last year contains 7.08 crore voters.
