West Bengal's Final Voters' List to Feature New Categories on February 28
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 26 (NationPress) The upcoming final voters' list for West Bengal, scheduled for release on February 28, will categorize names under two new classifications: "under adjudication" and "deleted", in addition to those recognized as valid voters. This structure will result in three distinct categories within the final voters' list.
Manoj Kumar Agarwal, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, informed the press Thursday evening that the "under adjudication" category will comprise individuals whose identity verification documents are still undergoing judicial review by specially appointed officers, as mandated by the Supreme Court.
He noted, "This group of voters will be documented in the ‘under adjudication’ category in the final voters' list."
Moreover, supplementary lists will be released subsequently, detailing the names of voters in the "under adjudication" category whose identities are confirmed through the judicial process.
The third category in the final voters' list will include individuals excluded throughout the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) procedure that commenced in November of the previous year. Agarwal mentioned that these excluded names will be classified under the "deleted" category.
According to sources from the CEO's office, the introduction of these three categories in the final voters' list is designed to enhance transparency and to inform voters of their current status.
However, the Election Commission is still deliberating on the final status of voters classified as "logical discrepancy", which pertains to cases where unusual family-tree data was identified during the "progeny mapping" process.
At the time of the SIR announcement, West Bengal had approximately 7.66 crore voters. The list has since undergone significant revisions, resulting in more than 58 lakh names being removed, including those of deceased individuals and duplicates. As of the draft list published in December, the total voter count stands at 7.08 crore.
It remains to be seen how many voters previously categorized under "logical discrepancy" will ultimately be removed.
