Kolkata, Oct 8 (NationPress) The timing of the Election Commission of India (ECI)’s special intensive revision (SIR) in West Bengal is becoming increasingly apparent following a significant meeting on SIR readiness held by a central delegation of the commission at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in the state.

During the meeting led by Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti, alongside other central ECI team members, CEO of West Bengal, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, and various senior officials from the CEO’s office and district electoral officers were present. They were directed to finalize preparations for the SIR between October 11 and October 15.

“The central ECI team representatives, particularly the deputy election commissioner, emphasized the need for groundwork completion between October 11 and 15 multiple times. This was interpreted as a clear signal that the commission aims for the SIR process to commence in West Bengal right after October 15,” noted an insider from the CEO’s office who was privy to the discussions.

Moreover, the central ECI team stressed the importance of having the enumeration forms required for the SIR process printed prior to the notification for the review being issued.

The insider revealed, “On the printing of enumeration forms, the central ECI team reiterated the deadline of October 11 to 15. The CEO’s office was tasked with ensuring 20 percent of the total enumeration forms were printed within the next three days.”

It was highlighted that in Bihar, where the SIR process was recently completed, the printing of enumeration forms began only after the SIR notification, causing challenges for electoral officers in executing the review smoothly. Therefore, the insider added, the commission intends to have most of the enumeration forms ready in advance of the notification in West Bengal.

During the meeting, the central ECI also reminded participants that in Bihar, disciplinary measures were implemented against electoral officers at various levels for failing to perform their duties effectively.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize the Election Commission's proactive approach in West Bengal. Ensuring the timely completion of SIR preparations reflects the commission's commitment to upholding electoral integrity. Such diligence is essential for fostering trust in the democratic process, especially in a region where past challenges have been noted.
