Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Nov 16 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has established a deadline for the completion of the digitisation of voters' information documented in the enumeration forms during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal by the end of November.
According to sources from the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office in West Bengal, the digitisation process for the enumeration forms collected by booth-level officers has commenced, with approximately 50 lakh enumeration forms already digitised. The pace of this work is set to accelerate starting Sunday, with completion anticipated by the end of the month as per the commission's directive.
On Saturday evening, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, the CEO of West Bengal, convened an urgent meeting involving District Magistrates, who are also the District Electoral Officers, along with their subordinate electoral officers across the districts, during which the deadline was formalised.
This meeting was attended virtually by senior officials from the ECI based in New Delhi.
Additionally, a central ECI team comprising four members will be visiting West Bengal to assess the ongoing SIR, which commenced on November 4.
The team will include Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti, along with two principal secretaries from the ECI, S B Joshi and Malay Mallick, and deputy secretary Abhinav Agarwal. They are scheduled to arrive in Kolkata on November 18 and will remain in the state until November 21. Their visit aims to evaluate the SIR progress in regions including Kolkata, South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, and Malda.
The upcoming visit by the central ECI team for a second review of the revision exercise underscores the poll panel's concentrated attention on the SIR's advancement in the state.
Earlier this month, a central ECI team, led by Bharti, conducted a visit to West Bengal following the distribution of enumeration forms on November 4, reviewing SIR progress in four districts located in North Bengal.
The initial phase of the three-stage SIR in West Bengal began on November 4, with the entire process slated for completion by March next year. Notably, the last SIR in West Bengal occurred in 2002.
