ECI's Two-Day Meeting to Review Bengal's Electoral Landscape Post-SIR
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 2 (NationPress) As the final voters' list in West Bengal is released, excluding those names undergoing judicial review as directed by the Supreme Court, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to hold pivotal meetings on Monday and Tuesday. These discussions will focus on the post-Special Intensive Revision (SIR) situation in the state in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections.
The meetings will be conducted in two segments, commencing at 11 a.m. on Monday. Senior officials will virtually convene with Manoj Kumar Agarwal, the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), along with Additional CEOs, Joint CEOs, Deputy CEOs, District Magistrates who serve as district electoral officers, and district police superintendents.
On Tuesday, the second phase will feature participation from the ECI's senior officials in New Delhi, the CEO, the state nodal police officer (SNPO), and various coordinating officers from central security and investigation agencies involved in the elections.
During the Monday session, ECI officials are expected to assess the current deployment of 240 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), already stationed in the state since Sunday.
Officials are likely to request updates on how the deployed CAPF companies are being utilized for area control and acclimatization to their respective geographies,” indicated an insider from the CEO's office.
Additionally, the meeting may address the potential deployment of an extra 240 companies on March 10. Moreover, the progress regarding the judicial review of approximately 60 lakh voters’ documents by ECI-appointed judicial officers will also be on the agenda, as per insider sources.
On Tuesday, the core agenda will aim to enhance coordination between state and central agencies for optimal utilization of CAPF, improve collaboration among various state and central intelligence and enforcement agencies to combat the influence of money, liquor, and drugs, and ensure safety in areas adjacent to both international and inter-state borders.
However, there remains ambiguity regarding the polling dates and the implementation of the model code of conduct. Originally, the polling dates were anticipated to be revealed in the first week of March, right after the Holi festival on March 4.
Yet, ongoing judicial reviews of the voters' documents imply that the announcement may now occur in the second week of March.
