Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 12 (NationPress) A designated team from the Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to visit West Bengal this week to conduct a comprehensive final assessment of the state's readiness for the upcoming two-phase elections on April 23 and April 29.
Sources within the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) have indicated that the special ECI team, led by Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharati, is expected to land in Kolkata on Monday morning. Their mission will be to evaluate the preparedness across the 294 Assembly constituencies within the state.
Upon their arrival, the visiting ECI personnel will be split into two groups. “One group will focus on assessing the situation in South Bengal districts, such as East Burdwan, West Burdwan, East Midnapore, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Kolkata. The second group will scrutinize the electoral preparations in North Bengal districts, including Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur, and South Dinajpur, among others,” a source from the CEO's office revealed.
Both teams will also convene discussions with local officials from the general and police administrations in the respective districts.
The Chief Electoral Officer for West Bengal, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, has been actively visiting various districts to ensure that election preparations are on track.
“This marks the first occasion where the CEO is personally undertaking district visits. All these efforts are aimed at fulfilling the Commission’s mission to guarantee completely free and fair elections, devoid of any violence,” stated a source from the CEO’s office. It is noteworthy that this is the first instance in recent elections that special ECI teams have been sent to West Bengal.
The elections will commence on April 23 for 152 Assembly constituencies, covering the entirety of North Bengal and specific districts in South Bengal. The second phase of voting will take place on April 29 for the remaining districts, particularly in Kolkata and its adjoining areas like North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Howrah.
Results are anticipated to be announced on May 4.
