Election Commission Raises Concerns Over Poll Readiness in Key Bengal Districts
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 5 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has indicated that the preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections in two districts along the Bangladesh border in West Bengal are not meeting expectations, as reported to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office.
The districts in question are South 24 Parganas in South Bengal and Cooch Behar in North Bengal.
According to sources from the CEO's office, last week, ECI officials held a virtual conference from their headquarters in New Delhi with district-level electoral officers, senior bureaucrats, and police personnel to assess the election readiness in various areas of the state.
“Upon reviewing the inputs gathered during the meeting, the ECI pinpointed significant shortcomings in election preparations. Despite Wednesday being a holiday for the Holi festival, Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharati conducted a brief virtual meeting with West Bengal’s electoral officers, including district magistrates who also serve as district electoral officers, that same evening. In this meeting, Bharati expressed his concerns regarding the inadequate progress in South 24 Parganas and Cooch Behar,” disclosed an insider from the CEO's office.
Bharati is expected to hold another series of virtual discussions with electoral officers, including district electoral officers, on Thursday, where he will likely outline measures to accelerate the election preparation process.
As per the established timeline, the ECI's full bench will arrive in West Bengal on the evening of March 8. Over the following two days, March 9 and March 10, they will engage in multiple extensive meetings to review the ongoing judicial examination of voters' documents categorized under logical discrepancies, alongside discussions on poll preparations.
Additionally, CPI(M) leaders and activists demonstrated overnight outside the CEO’s office in central Kolkata starting late Wednesday, demanding that the Commission refrain from announcing polling dates until the judicial review process is complete and the names of all legitimate voters are retained on the list.
The sit-in continued into Thursday morning, with CPI(M) leaders stating the protest would persist until they have a meeting with West Bengal CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal.
The final voters’ list was released on February 28, excluding names referred for judicial scrutiny. Supplementary lists will be published in due course as the judicial process advances.
