Kolkata, Feb 15 (NationPress) Following the conclusion of the hearing session on claims and objections to the draft voters' list in West Bengal, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has pinpointed five districts in the state where the frequency of uploading “unlisted” documents has been alarmingly high. The scrutiny of supporting identity documents will continue until February 21.

The five districts identified are Cooch Behar, Malda, Murshidabad, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas, all of which share borders with Bangladesh, with South 24 Parganas primarily having coastal borders.

According to sources from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in West Bengal, aside from these five districts where the prevalence of uploading of ‘unlisted’ documents is exceptionally high, similar irregularities have been noted to a lesser extent in East Burdwan and West Burdwan.

The highest instances of ‘unlisted’ documents have been found in cases of “logical discrepancy”, while irregularities concerning “unmapped” voters have been minimal. “Unmapped” voters are those who cannot establish any connection through “self mapping” or “progeny mapping” with the voter list from 2002, the last time a comprehensive revision was conducted in West Bengal.

Conversely, “logical discrepancy” cases refer to instances where unusual family trees have been observed during “progeny” mapping.

The Commission has once again warned district magistrates and electoral officers to ensure that only the 13 listed documents are recognized as valid identity proof. Despite this, the high number of ‘unlisted’ documents uploaded in these districts has displeased the Commission, as stated by sources in the CEO’s office.

Interestingly, during a virtual full-bench meeting led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, he instructed the DMs and DEOs to remove any “unlisted” documents already in the system by February 16.

The final voters' list for West Bengal is set to be published on February 28. Following this, a full bench of the ECI will embark on a two-day visit to West Bengal on March 1 to evaluate the post-SIR scenario. Subsequently, the ECI will announce polling dates for the critical assembly elections scheduled later this year.

Point of View

It is essential to recognize that the integrity of electoral processes is fundamental to democracy. The identification of these five districts raises significant concerns that need to be addressed by the authorities to ensure a fair electoral environment. It is critical for voters to have confidence in the system.
